This week my swim workouts were designed to increase my lactate tolerance. My swim distance was less than usual however the intensity of the workout was extremely high with several all-out sprints followed by extended recovery swims. The bottom line, the increased speed had my body demanding more oxygen than I could comfortably serve up and my lactate acid production escalated. I could feel a tingly burning sensation in my arms and legs.

I had reached my Lactate Threshold. Or did I?

Numbness and tingling are two of the most common symptoms of multiple sclerosis. Pretty much all of us with multiple sclerosis (MS) have experienced the tingles at some time. The tingles usually occur as part of a pseudo MS attack – a temporary increase in symptoms caused by an external factor.

Heat intolerance and MS fatigue are two common causes of the tingles.

Two hours after completing my workout I am experiencing numbness in my lower arms and hands and lower legs and feet. It is not the same kind of numbness I experience when I am having difficulty with heat – there is a soreness that accompanies it.

Is it MS Tingles or Lactic Burn?
